Although the concept of “energy” and its measurement in calories are widely understood, many consumers view the nutritional assessment system as complex, confusing and disconnected from the everyday activities of eating. Even so, consumers perceive nutrition labelling as an important piece of information, but many also say that it should be made more transparent, easier to read and more appealing to consumers.
Several stakeholders from different sectors are involved in nutrition research and policy. Nutrition research can improve the nutritional status of populations and contribute to national development agendas and policies. It can be coordinated through multisectoral networks and communicated to diverse audiences. It can help policy makers make decisions to help reduce the incidence of malnutrition, thereby improving the quality of life for those affected by it.
SUNRAY’s consortium involved academics from four European institutions and four SSA universities. The consortium analyzed the current research landscape for nutrition in SSA and identified priorities for research in the field. It also conducted a stakeholder survey to identify areas that require additional research. This data was used to create a roadmap document.
There is a need for a more systematic approach to nutrition research. Decision makers in SSA need to have a voice in setting the research agenda. This process should be collaborative and transparent. There should be a mechanism to translate evidence into recommendations. The SSA should take the lead in the process. As a result, nutrition researchers should be able to communicate their findings to decision makers and policymakers.
This new approach will also stimulate demand for nutrition research in SSA and hold policymakers accountable for incorporating the findings of nutrition research into policy. The need for more nutrition research has increased with the emergence of diet-related non-communicable diseases. In addition, emerging threats to nutrition and health, including climatic and demographic changes, need innovative mitigation approaches.
In SSA, the current research agenda is perceived to be driven by high-income countries. Researchers in SSA are unlikely to attract competitive funding from outside sources, so efforts are needed to develop regional networks and leverage the existing research capacity. In addition, scholarship programs from donor countries may need to be reformed so that they favour local PhD programs and exchange programs.
Despite the many benefits of a healthy diet, inadequate nutrition is associated with increased disease risk. In addition to a decreased quality of life, inadequate nutrition is associated with an increased frequency of GP visits and hospitalization. This increased incidence of health problems is often the result of blocked absorption of nutrients. Despite the importance of adequate nutrition, it is often neglected in the healthcare system.
